Though geometry was decidedly not my strongest suit when I was a high school student, recently I have become increasingly fascinated by how much of our world is shaped by principles of geometry. The natural world is a plethora of fractals, Fibonacci spirals, and a seemingly infinite variety of patterns. Looking at my surroundings through that lens has been fueling a deeper dive into how I can use this information, these patterns, to inform both the content and structures of my work.
All of which led me to this project loosely titled "What Was I Thinking”: a series of 52 sculptural/geometrically inspired books - one for each week of a year. Initially I started down this path because I wanted to make friends with what had been one of my least favorite colors: orange. An exploration of this one color became an avenue for paying attention to the way in which colors around us change throughout the year. This led to thoughts about time - how it seems more circular than linear; expectations - how what we expect is not always what ends up in front of us; and seasons in general - both the changing palettes and shifting patterns in the natural world, as well as the phases of one's own life.
